Glen Schofield has confirmed that upcoming horror The Callisto Protocol has severed its ties to publisher stablemate PUBG Battlegrounds.

Back in December of 2020, developer Striking Distance revealed the curious info in an interview that the two games were related. Schofield said at the time that he had brought the game’s story to publisher Krafton at the time the two companies started working together. He then, he said, threaded PUBG‘s world into that same story.

However, since then it seems the team have decided to take a different tack. On Twitter last night, Schofield wrote: “FYI (The Callisto Protocol) is its own story and world. It no longer takes place in the PUBG Universe. It was originally part of the PUBG timeline, but grew into its own world. PUBG is awesome, & we will still have little surprises for fans, but TCP is its own world, story and universe.”

Schofield elaborated a little further on the change in direction to Game Informer. He said “The idea of us being in the universe at first sounded really good, and then as you start coming up with your story we realized ‘Wow, this is a little out there’. We built in some touchpoints, and you’ll find them throughout the game like Easter eggs and things like that.”

The Callisto Protocol may no longer be related to PUBG, but it is currently set for launch on PC and consoles later this year.
