Sports Interactive announced there would be no official Football Manager 24 update for the 2024/25 season. Below is the official reasoning provided by the company. Unsurprisingly, the announcement didn’t go over well with fans.

A quick glance at the comment section reveals the outcry—it’s clear that the Football Manager community is fatigued by a series of negative announcements and what feels like a relentless stream of disappointments. While it’s easy to react this way (I admit, it was my initial response too), this particular decision isn’t as dire as it seems, and it’s not the real issue at hand.

There are already numerous data updates available for the game. Yes, having an official update that reflects changes to player current ability and potential ability is nice, but we’re certainly not lacking options. FM Inside has a fantastic update you can download, Sortitoutsi has also put one together, and there are many more out there. If you want to play with updated squads, leagues, and players, a quick search on Google or the Steam Workshop will point you in the right direction.

The real concern lies with the upcoming Football Manager 2025. I foresee a potentially disastrous situation brewing. Yesterday, I conducted a poll asking, “After this afternoon’s update, are you going to buy Football Manager 2025, or wait for Football Manager 2026?” The results were eye-opening: nearly 11,000 votes, with only 18.1% indicating they would purchase Football Manager 2025.

There are some caveats to these poll results. Twitter (I refuse to call it X) can be an echo chamber, and this poll doesn’t capture the feelings of casual fans. Some voters may change their minds as the release date approaches. Still, this reflects a troubling sentiment regarding Football Manager 2025 and the franchise as a whole. Many fans simply don’t see the point in purchasing the game with only two months left in the season.

I foresee a potentially disastrous situation brewing.

My concern is that if even a slightly similar percentage of players decide not to purchase the game, Sports Interactive could face significant financial losses, potentially affecting future iterations of the series. If this is merely a blip and we lose out on a regular version of Football Manager for just one year, that’s fine by me. However, if this marks the beginning of a downward spiral for the series and Sports Interactive, well, I might just start crying.

What are your thoughts on yesterday’s announcement and the current state of Football Manager?
