The Tetris Company has lifted the veil on a brand new take on the 34-year-old brain-teasing classic. Say hello to Tetris Effect, a game that looks as trippy as 1970s-era progressive rock music video.

Tetris Effect plucks its name directly from the real-world phenomenon, where folks have lingering dreams, visions, and thoughts of falling Tetris blocks as a result of being way too engrossed in playing the game.

At its core it's very much Tetris as you know it, but with various twists and turns to enhance the experience like never before. Anything from the backgrounds, music, special effects, sounds, and more will react in sync according to how you play, and it all takes place in fully three-dimensional worlds.

Fans of the brain-aching puzzler can look forward to classics such as Marathon, Sprint, and Ultra making a comeback, though more will be revealed closer to launch. Players will also be graded on performance, giving you a nudge to come back and keep plugging away at the action.

From the sound of things it'll look the business too, with the press blurb promising sumptuous 4K resolution visuals when played on the PlayStation 4 Pro, while PSVR support further immerses you in the proceedings.

New gameplay wrinkles include the Zone mechanic, allowing you to call time on, well, time, as well as stopping the blocks from tumbling down.

Tetris Effect is due out on PS4 in the autumn. Check out a trailer below.
