Critics have been raving about the gloriously punishing bloodbath that is Super Meat Boy, released on Xbox LIVE Arcade last week.
However, Team Meat (Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes) won’t be returning to Super Meat Boy for a sequel, at least not immediately.
McMillen told Eurogamer that “there will be another game but it won’t be Meat Boy. It’ll be totally new.”
He added: “We’d be lying if we said we hadn’t talked about the next game – because we very much have. But thinking about it right now makes me want to stab myself in the stomach as hard as I can. With a gun.”
McMillen is also confident the two-man team will keep hang on to its independent status.
“I seriously doubt we’ll ever try to get a publisher deal as that seems like the most awful thing ever. That just means we have to have more people telling us what we can and can’t do with our game and that seems bad,” he explained.
Super Meat Boy is available now for a limited time reduced price of 800 MS Points.
We don’t know exactly how well Super Meat Boy has been selling, but the game’s official blog claims it is a “success”. The post added: “Sales are high, reviews are mind blowing and your out pour of love for the game is flooding the interwebs!” That’s before the game hits PC and WiiWare.
Given the time it took for Super Meat Boy to see the light of day, fans shouldn’t expect the next game anytime soon.
