Valve has announced that Steam will now support Free-to-Play games, making five titles immediately available to celebrate the news.

For the next five days, starting today, Valve will a highlight a “F2P Game of the Day”, encouraging players to take part by offering exclusive content. Steam’s own micro-transaction system, currently seen in Team Fortress 2 and in Steamworks titles, will be used for handling purchases.

The five launch titles are: Champions Online: Free for All, Spiral Knights, Forsaken Worlds, Global Agenda: Free Agent, and Alliance of Valliant Arms.

“The introduction of Free-to-Play games is another example of the constant evolution of Steam,” said Jason Holtman, Valve’s director of business development.

Given how increasingly common (and successful) the Free-to-Play model is becoming, it’s no surprise to see Valve taking this step.

Champions Online is probably the biggest name out of the five launch games, but Pearson also recommends Global Agenda as being worth a go. We haven’t tried the others, but it won’t cost you anything to take a look if you’re curious.
