Fans think they may have spotted the first appearance of planet Earth in Starfield following the game’s latest footage shown this past weekend.

After pouring over the footage shown during the Starfield Direct, members of the game’s subreddit spotted our home planet briefly flashing up on screen, although it didn’t have its usual blue/green appearance we’ve all come to expect. “First image of Earth we see in the game,” says OP GdSmith. “Not the usual blue we’re used to, an indication of what may have happened to our planet.”

While it’s fairly easy to recognise the image as our solar system judging by the position, etc of the celestial bodies – the planet in question just looks like a white spot, which may have indicated that the world’s oceans have dried up and we are looking at what is, in essence, a dead or dying planet. Most of those repsonding in the thread have come to a similar conclusion, such as HeroicJacobie who says “Makes me kinda sad tbh.” and InToddWeTrust2023 who says “Look how they massacred my planet!”

The community is having fun coming up with scenarios as to why our home planet has suffered this fate. Of course, humans themselves trashing their own planet is a frontrunner – “It’s probably something to do with humans,” says VP007Clips. “That’s usually how these games do it.Probably a superweapon, failed experiment, or overconsumption (although the scale of all the oceans being gone makes that unlikely.)” And of course, the community can’t rule out the traditional “It could also be aliens.”

But there’s a few more wild theories too – including the entertaining idea that studio head Todd Howard himself might be behind the Earth’s fate. “Actually it was all Todd. He fired the Nukes.” claims Ryermeke. In a similar vein, some fans are thinking this could be a perfect opportunity for some crossovers – by putting forward the idea Starfield could have the potential to be part of a shared Bethesda RPG universe.

“The game is so goddamn big that Fallout 5 is playable and you just have to fly to earth,” jests MisterTestiggles. “Elder Scrolls 6? Head a couple dozen light years and you’ll find NIRN.” – and while this comment is clearly playing around, we can’t deny it’d be a tantalising prospect. That is of course, unless Bethesda’s hardcore modding community doesn’t get there first – which as LuckyLanno reminds us, could be a real possibility. “You jest, but some madman is going to put Skyrim in it.” Given Skyrim is available on just about everything else already, it wouldn’t surprise us either.

The Starfield release date has been set for September 6, 2023 on Xbox Series X|S and PC. If you missed the Starfield Direct earlier in the week, check out how it overhauls combat right here.
