Many of those excited for the upcoming Starfield release date are hoping that the RPG will allow them to live out their space exploration fantasies in a way that other games, such as the long-in-development Star Citizen, have not.

Star Citizen, in case you’re weren’t aware, has now been in development for over a decade and has had a development budget of an eye-watering $590 million USD via various crowdfunding campaigns, stretch goals, in-game purchases and other initiatives. Despite all of this, it’s still not considered a finished game and there’s plenty of people who feel they’ve given money to the project and not been able to get the space experience they wanted from their pledge, such as those on the Starfield subreddit.

In a thread entitled “Star citizen sold me a pipe dream but now I can build my own dreams” Idontknowdoesitmatta says “Thank you Bethesda. (sic) Definitely going to be building some of the ships I wish I could use in Star Citizen and the ships I used in Elite Dangerous. Very, very excited to build my space booty theft machine!” This is a common thread in many of the responses, especially as buying ships has been one of the aforementioned ways Star Citizen has raised its development budget. “Gonna see so many Star Citizen ships modded into Starfield lol Im all for it,” says dreadfamilyadventure. “I’ve got ships i bought years ago i still haven’t been able to fly because they don’t exist yet.”

Though some users are still remaining cautious, especially as Starfield too isn’t actually out yet, a few are joking that a potential Starfield sequel would still arrive before the end of Star Citizen’s long protracted development cycle. “Star Citizen is a $500 million tech demo that barely works, but I will give it credit for its art direction,” says Titan7771. “Wonder if Starfield 2 will have a more futuristic feel like this.” Many are also pointing out how Starfield may be a decent alternative to the Star Citizen standalone singleplayer campaign Squadron 42, which has been largely MIA since 2020. “I wonder if Squadron 42 gets delayed even more because Chris Roberts wants what from Starfield,” posits 1Evan_PolkAdot.

Regardless, it seems ships from both Star Citizen and another popular space exploration game, Frontier’s Elite Dangerous will be a big source of inspiration for many aspiring ship builders in Starfield when it arrives on September 6, 2023. That is, if the Starfield community isn’t already busy building unique and absurd original creations instead.
