Eric ‘ConcernedApe’ Barone’s Stardew Valley is one of the most modded video games of all time. Alongside Skyrim—which will likely never be beaten in terms of mods—the cosy farming game has thousands upon thousands of mods… and the game’s creator hasn’t really played any of them.
Speaking to PC Gamer after GDC 2025, Barone explained that he doesn’t really “try” Stardew Valley mods. While the game developer has hired the game’s biggest modder to assist with updates, he’s not really interested in trying mods all that much. Nevertheless, it’s cool to see.
Stardew Valley creator doesn’t play mods
In the interview, Barone was asked about Baldur’s Village, the popular Baldur’s Gate 3 x Stardew Valley mod that was taken down by Wizards of the Coast. While the game developer is aware of the mod, he hasn’t tried it, and doesn’t really try any mods.
“I haven’t tried it,” the developer said. “I don’t really try Stardew Valley mods, but I have seen like pictures of it, screenshots, and I read an article about it, but I think it’s cool.”
Barone explained he’s “totally supportive of modding”, reiterating that the recent Stardew Valley 1.6 update made the game “so much easier to mod”. While the game’s creator doesn’t try mods for his game, he wants modders to be able to keep creating what they want… especially as the developer gives up Stardew updates to work on his next game.
“Modders have, like, so much more power and control over every little thing [now],” the developer said. “So, I’m hoping that they utilize those features to make [what they want]. The other thing about Stardew is [that] it’s just so accessible in terms of, I mean, you play this game and it does look kind of amateur in a way, and so it feels like, ‘I could make a mod for this. It’s very simple.’”
Barone explained that Stardew Valley is a “great way for people to get into modding”, but that doesn’t mean he needs to experience those mods. Let’s be honest, there’s a lot of Stardew mods, and there’s a lot of quality on display, but there’s almost too much to actually consume.
