Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 is already a phenomenal RPG with thousands of amazing mods. However, the release of official mod tools—that we’re quickly cracked by the community—has opened the way for players to create custom campaigns, companions, animations, dialogue and all manner of goodies for fans to enjoy.
Modders Gregory Lotrich and Thomas Loughlin are just cogs of a fan machine working on Path To Menzoberranzan, a massive custom campaign that brings players back to Baldur’s Gate 2’s iconic city of Athkatla and more. While modders create campaigns based around rock concerts and bring players to lands from World of Warcraft, the Path To Menzoberranzan team is working on a game-sized adventure with its own story, companions, quests and gameplay tweaks.
Baldur’s Gate 3 will be bigger than Skyrim
In an interview with VideoGamer, the team behind the mod explained that the community’s efforts in reverse engineering mod tools and understanding BG3’s proprietary Divinity Engine has led to some massive advancements in what is possible for fan-made content.

“[Readers] may be excited about our stuff, but we are equally as excited about the things that we know about,” Loughlin said. “The future is so bright for the morning community within Baldur’s Gate. I can’t imagine where we’re going to be this time next year.”
“I’ve seen some things that’re still not announced, and this… it’s madness. There’s still a lot of potential in Baldur’s Gate modding community.”
Path To Menzoberranzan developer Gregory Lotrich
Lotrich, the technical know-how behind the Path To Menzoberranzan mod, explained that the future of Baldur’s Gate 3 is incredibly bright because of two reasons: the dedication and talent of the game’s brilliant community and the ingenuity of Larian’s toolkit.
“You know, I actually think it’s going to slightly overcome Skyrim [eventually],” Lotrich explained. “Because, well, I’ve seen some things that’re still not announced, and this… it’s madness. There’s still a lot of potential in Baldur’s Gate modding community, and it’s not just us.
“The toolkit is good, it’s very good. It’s very informative. Its UI is good, it’s easy to learn, it’s easy to reverse engineer. The only problem is you have zero documentation, and you need to reverse engineer every process. But after you understand how to do it and what to do, it’s good.”
“I think from my side, it is the passion,” Loughlin added. “But it’s also the level of experience that we seem to be getting from people who want to be a part of the mod. I’m lucky enough to have a background in film and television. We’ve got people who have backgrounds in video game development; we’ve got people with backgrounds who are also in film. And just that wealth of experience that we’ve somehow managed to hone… it doesn’t feel like an amateur production. It feels like something professional.”
What’s clear right now is that the modding community for Baldur’s Gate 3 is only just getting started, and it already started off strong. Even before modding tools were truly available, beloved additions like Trials of Tav created incredible new gameplay experiences for players. Now that the toolkit is becoming understood, modders are going to create like never before, and everyone wins.
