Rumours about a new Starcraft game have been doing the rounds for months, with some sources even claiming that the next game in the series would be an MMO in the same mould as World of Warcraft. That rumour has now been firmly put to bed, with Blizzard announcing Starcraft II and revealing it to be another real-time strategy game.

Announced at a special event in the Olympic Gymnastic Stadium in Seoul, South Korea, the news that the series is sticking to its RTS roots will no doubt be a huge relief to many fans. Starcraft is one of the most popular games in South Korea, with professional gamers playing head to head on a regular basis.

Former EA LA designer Dustin Browder is lead designer on the project and he demoed the game to the gathered crowd. By all accounts the sequel retains the look and feel of the original, but sports modern 3D visuals. The development team is currently approximately 40 in number and no release date has been set. Blizzard has stated that the game will be released when it’s ready.
