Star Wars Outlaws is one of the hottest releases of the summer, and certainly one of the most anticipated. After the Star Wars license has been in the hands of EA for many years, fans of the franchise have been curious to see what Ubisoft can do when given the reins to create their own tale in the iconic universe. Despite some criticism prior to its launch, so far it has been a success, with many praising Star Wars Outlaws, both fans and critics alike.

U/FlaccidArmpit took to the Star Wars Outlaws sub-Reddit to praise the game for focusing on a normal person in the galaxy rather than a Jedi or soldier saying,

“This has literally been my dream game since I was a kid – just a random nobody living life in Star Wars rather than a crazy Jedi who can bring down Star Destroyers,” before going on to praise the game saying “The world is so detailed and there are so many things to interact with, it’s one of the most detailed open worlds I’ve ever seen and the bonus is that it’s freaking Star Wars!!!”

This is something that is rarely done and for obvious reasons. The Jedi are a key part of the Star Wars universe, and who doesn’t like fighting with a brightly colored laser sword? There are some games where players don’t play as a Jedi, but many of those revolve around other exciting characters such as soldiers or bounty hunters. Star Wars Outlaws does mark one of the few games where you’re just an everyday citizen who ends up going on an adventure.

Other players agreed too, with U/Jamie–UK saying “Let’s hope this is the start of many more Star Wars open-world games.” U/wereturningbob also praised the openness of Star Wars Outlaws by saying that”It’s hard to believe it’s taken this long for a decent open-world Star Wars game to come out where you aren’t playing a Jedi. I always felt there’s so much more you can do with the Star Wars universe than just Jedi-focused storylines and gameplay.”

Not everyone had praise for the game though, as U/FlopTheLegend criticized it by stating that aspect felt limited and forced,

“I enjoy most of the game, but a lot of things feel very limiting. I hate the forced stealth sections with the goofy stealth we have now. I like improvising, but here it just forces you out of the stealth section with a loading screen. Only one blaster and speeder is also quite underwhelming as well. Combat feels quite plain, but maybe it gets more fun with some weapon upgrades later on. I really enjoy the story and the world though.”

So far, I have been enjoying my time with Star Wars Outlaws. I do agree with a lot of these points, it is enjoyable to play a title in the Star Wars universe where you’re just a regular person, it does make for a welcomed change. However, I do feel that the game is just…fine. I have nothing particularly bad to say about it, but it is just a good game. I definitely do think a lot of the pre-release criticism is unwarranted and now that many of us have the game in our hands it is evident that it is a surprisingly solid release and has squashed any doubt that the community had beforehand. If you’re just getting started with Star Wars Outlaws as it leaves early access and fully launches on August 30th, I highly recommend checking out our tips and tricks guide to help you get your adventure underway.
