A recent new feature added to Star Citizen appears to have gone down like a lead balloon, with players of the space sim finding themselves waiting extortionately long times to play as a result.

Over on the Star Citizen subreddit, many posts are asking developers CIG to “listen to your community” and “revert the new claim times – as the feature, despite supposedly being in place to relieve server strain, is having the side-effect of making players wait hours for ships, leaving them unable to play large parts of the game’s freeform space universe. “Today our ships blow up due to bugs or 30ks and server crashes. Now because of this we have to wait too long to be able to play the game, because of a situation that we, the players, cannot control and it is not our fault.”

To explain the mechanic – when obtaining vehicles and ships when logging into the game for the first time, you’ll need to claim a ship before you can play – similar to the game’s Insurance Claim mechanic. However, you must wait a certain amount of time before you can – in order to not overload the game servers with requests for new ships. However, you can speed up this time by – of course – paying credits. “I was planning to play the game for an hour – claim time shouldn’t be over half of that, and un-expedited more than half again longer,” says ThisremindsmeofBacon.

Some players are pointing out they understand this time for larger ships – or later into the game, when it shouldn’t be too simple to get back a fully kitted out ship, otherwise players could just trash these ships and grief newer, weaker ships more quickly. However – a great number of players claim they’re losing ships through no fault of their own, and are still having to suffer this wait. “Right now, when 90% of lost ships are due to a bug or crash? Urgh, no.”

Star Citizen is still, officially, in development – but is currently in the middle of a promotion where you can play it free until May 30. Hopefully, the development team will take these considerations on board in future updates, especially with a wealth of new players sure to join over the coming days.
