Final Fantasy has often pushed the boundaries of the RPG genre with its unique blend of storytelling, visual design, and combat, but it seems that Square Enix is ready to think outside the box even more after company Vice President Yoshinori Kitase stated that “he’d be open to a Final Fantasy game in the style of Call of Duty.”
As part of an article by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Kitase also said Call of Duty is “using all this modern weaponry, but when you think about it, it’s this small group of people saving the world – that’s very Final Fantasy.” He then mentioned that all the FPS title would need to truly turn it into a Square Enix creation would be the addition of crystals.
Although a Final Fantasy entry influenced by the fast-paced action of Call of Duty seems a bit farfetched, it might not be too far out of the norm for a franchise that’s as adaptive as Square Enix’s. After all, they’ve constantly altered each of their series’ entries formulas throughout the years to cater to the gaming community’s changing tastes, one example of which is Final Fantasy 7, 15, and 16’s transition to action-based combat as opposed to the turn-based system of yore.
It’s important to keep in mind, though, that these statements from Yoshinori Kitase may simply be the Square Enix vice president keeping an open mind and we may never actually see a Call of Duty and Final Fantasy crossover come to fruition. But, in case it does it happen at some point in the future, then the community will undoubtedly be there to embrace it with open arms – after some initial apprehension, that is.
