Earlier this week Square Enix said it was expecting to ship around one million copies of Final Fantasy XIII to Japan for the game’s launch.

According to CEO Yoichi Wada, this figure has actually ended up being much closer to two million, with 1.8 million copies ready for Japanese gamers to snap up. This puts the game’s launch shipment almost on par with that of Final Fantasy XII, which had around two million copies available on day one.

Final Fantasy XIII is on sale now in Japan (only on PS3), but we’ll have to wait until March 9, 2010 for the European version.
