Square Enix Japan’s First Development Division is busying away on a new and unannounced  intellectual property that will run on the next generation of consoles (via Gematsu).

Game Talk spotted that the Square Enix Japan recruitment site described the project as a ‘next-generation action game experience’ that will require ‘an international team of creators from all over the world.’ It will go ‘beyond the framework of existing action games’ to deliver a unique experience from the esteemed First Development Division.

The Square Enix sector has titles like Final Fantasy VII Remake, Kingdom Hearts III, SaGa: Scarlet Grace, the Romancing SaGa 3 remaster, and Romancing SaGa Re:Universe under its belt. The fact that this is a totally new intellectual property is especially interesting, given the developer’s propensity for prequels, sequels, and remakes. Square Enix Osaka wants to hire UI designers, effect designers, and technical artists for ‘HD development of the Kingdom Hearts series’, hinting once more at a focus on next-gen.

And of course, the Final Fantasy VII remake will work with the PlayStation 5, though CEO Yosuke Matsuda didn’t clarify if that meant backwards compatibility or a PlayStation 5 as well as a PlayStation 4 release. That game will release worldwide on March 3, 2020, and looks very swishy.

We don’t know much more than that about this new project and I imagine we won’t hear again for some time if its pitched towards next-gen hardware. But, it is an intriguing discovery, so watch this space for updates.
