Wii U’s ink-based multiplayer shooter Splatoon has now sold over 1.62 million units worldwide, Nintendo announced today as part of its first quarter earnings release.

Japan accounts for 490,000 units, with 1.12 million in the rest of the world. The figure includes downloads and all units bundled with hardware.

A statement from Nintendo reads: “With respect to Wii U, Splatoon, which was released globally in May and gathered attention, marked 1.62 million units in sales and contributed to vitalizing the Wii U platform.”

The new sales figure comes after an announcement in June that the Wii U title had sold 1 million units.

At the time Nintendo of Europe President Satoru Shibata commented: “Since Splatoon launched on 29th May, it has been great to see so many players competing in online matches.

“We are pleased this new Wii U exclusive game is capturing the imagination of so many fans across Europe, and look forward to bringing more exclusive titles to both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS this year.”
