Spelunky 2 will not be released this year after all, as announced on Twitter yesterday by its creator and developer Derek Yu.
He cited that the ‘density and detail of the game’ caused the team to re-evaluate the launch date, but fortunately the development journey is ‘still going well’.
Hey, Spelunky fans! Unfortunately, I don't think we're going to get to release Spelunky 2 this year. Development is still going well and we're not far off target, but the density and detail of the game is demanding more time.

Yu apologised for the unintentionally sporadic updates from the developer, and stated that it’s a question of balancing communication with fans and the project’s progression, and also not giving too much away. Its focus now is to keep the momentum ticking along on Spelunky 2’s development; once a release date is decided, the fans will be the first to know.
And, there may be some surprises to look forward to in the future. Yu added as a final comment, ‘all the crazy stuff we're adding makes me buzz with excitement’. I guess there’s more than one type of buried treasure coming to Spelunky 2.
Spelunky 2 will be released on PlayStation 4 and PC in 2020. Watch the gameplay trailer below.
