Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has announced that it will release a Speed Racer video game based on the upcoming film written and directed by the Wachowski brothers (the Matrix trilogy and V for Vendetta).

The Wii and PS2 versions are in development by Sidhe Interactive and will enable players to take on the role of the characters from the film, getting behind the wheel of each character’s signature vehicles.

Speed Racer is an exceptionally creative property and teamed with the Wachowski brothers’ vision it makes for action-packed racing gameplay,” said Samantha Ryan, senior vice president, development and production, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “The game will capture the intensity of the racing in the film to give gamers and movie fans a chance to take the wheel after the experience the film.

The motion picture is based on the classic series created by anime pioneer Tatsuo Yoshida and is a live-action family adventure that follows a young race-car driver in his quest for glory. The film stars Emile Hirsh as Speed, Christina Ricci as Trixie and Mathew Fox as Racer X.

Wii and Nintendo DS versions will be released alongside the film’s debut at cinemas, with the PS2 version arriving with the movie’s debut on DVD.
