Disney Interactive Studios has today announced the autumn 2008 release of Spectrobes: Beyond The Portals, the sequel to the 2007 sci-fi action/role playing game Spectrobes.

Spectrobes has shipped more than one million units worldwide and was the best-selling third-party Nintendo DS title of 2007 in North America.

The sequel continues the story of Rallen and Jeena, interplanetary patrol officers who discover, excavate, awaken and train mysterious fossilized creatures known as Spectrobes and then use them to battle enemies. The story revolves around the origins of mysterious portals that lead to distant dimensions.

New features promised include a new 3D perspective, a map to assist exploration, new excavation and battle features, more creatures and an online battle system which utilises Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Players will also be able to take control of Jeena, who uses her research and technological skills to solve puzzles.

The game also includes DGamer, Disney Interactive Studios’ new technology that provides a connected online game community for Disney video game fans.

“Spectrobes has become an international sensation,” said Craig Relyea, senior vice president of global marketing, Disney Interactive Studios. “By continuing to build on its enthralling story, unique gameplay features and memorable characters, Spectrobes: Beyond The Portals will continue to thrill fans. This second game is part of our plan to expand the series in the coming years.”

Spectrobes: Beyond The Portals is scheduled for release on Nintendo DS in the autumn.
