Update: Publisher Focus Home Interactive has confirmed a new patch will be released to address complaints in Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2. After the latest patch nerfed weapons and made the game more difficult, players have complained about the state of the recent action game.
In a statement sent out on social media, the publisher confirmed that a new patch is in the works to revert nerfs and make players feel powerful again.
“We closely read your feedback regarding the latest patch for Space Marine 2 and we’re actively working on another one including balancing fixes.” the publisher said. “It should release next week. Again, thank you for your support. For the Emperor.”
Original Story: Following a very successful launch, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 has been hit with a huge spike in negative user reviews, much to the surprise of players joining forces to defeat the Tyranind invasion in the new Kadaku Operation.
The spike follows the game’s October 17 update which introduced Lethal Difficulty alongside the new Hierophant Bio Titan enemy, a force to be reckoned with for even the toughest Space Marines. While the new content is exciting, players are upset at nerfs that have been introduced to make the game harder.
Negative reviews spike following update
Saber Interactive admitted the Operations mode in Space Marine 2 was too easy for players to complete, increasing difficulty and adding another formidable foe to contend with. Shortly after the changes were implemented, fans were quick to share their frustrations in the form of hundreds of Steam reviews.
Fans believe the adjustments made have made them weaker instead of attempting to maintain some kind of balance with the addition of harder enemies to defeat. Some believe the changes are unnecessary, claiming the developers are out of touch with the player base. Nevertheless, there are some players enjoying the masochistic new difficulty shift.
Space Marine 2 isn’t the first PvE game to release updates that create huge imbalances. The player count of Helldivers 2 plummeted following updates that did more harm than good. Arrowhead managed to turn the situation around with a wealth of weapon balance resulting in the player count doubling as fans returned to restore democracy once again.
Will the devs listen?
Considering the Steam reviews have nose-dived since the update went live, there’s a strong possibility Saber Interactive has noticed the barrage of negative feedback that’s headed in its direction. The developer has maintained open communication with players since launch so you can be sure changes are on the way.
The developer has already said it will continue monitoring the balance of the Operations mode and it won’t be the final change. Let’s hope the next patch will restore some order before the situation escalates even further.
With years of support planned for the game following its record-breaking sales, it seems that Saber will be introducing missions, weapons and more for years to come. However, that level of support requires a consistent player base, one which only exists if players are still enjoying the game.
