Online multiplayer is by no means a given when it comes to the fighting genre. Sure it’s the norm for an FPS, but in a genre which at the top level is all about split-second timing there’s mixed opinions about online bouts.
Namco’s Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection for PS3 is to get an update to enable online play and its other giant fighting franchise, SoulCalibur, looks to be joining the party – SoulCalibur IV Director Katsutoshi Sasaki has confirmed to video games magazine EGM (reported by 1up) that the game will include online play.
“What’s changed this time round is that the next-gen platforms have network infrastructure already in place,” said Sasaki. “We’ve heard from fans that they really want the game to be online, so we figured that, with the current environment, we really couldn’t make SC4 without online play.“
SoulCalibur IV is scheduled for release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2008.
