After several years of conjecture and discussion, the power behind Sony’s PS3 has been has finally been revealed. The Cell Processor was unveiled yesterday by IBM, Sony Corporation, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and Toshiba Corporation, where they revealed some of the key concepts behind the chip that is expected to power many next generation computing applications and consumer electronics. Of course, the main concern for all of us is what this means for the PS3.

Basically the Cell is based around a 64-bit Power processor core, which will make the PS3 comparable to the next generation of computers and has been designed to support ‘multi-channel HD broadcasting programs as well as mega-pixel digital still/movie images captured by high-resolution CCD/CMOS imagers’. This can only bode well for the kind of power it’s going to be able to throw around when it comes to the next generation of games. It also hints at the kind of multi-media system Sony may have in store. Though whatever happens, you can find out the latest news on the PS3 right here.
