Sony has reassured PlayStation 3 gamers that Sixaxis battery degradation will not be an issue. You might have noticed that the Sixaxis does not feature a removable battery pack, meaning if the battery dies the controller dies too. However, Sony says the lithium battery inside the controller will hardly suffer any degradation.

The latest generation of Lithium Polymer batteries hardly suffer any memory effect at all, so it’ll be many years before there’s any degradation in terms of battery performance,” a Sony spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz.

If one of your controllers does degrade (presumably by a significant degree), Sony says it will “be providing a service to exchange these items.

The Sixaxis controller can be recharged using a supplied USB cable to connect to the PS3. The European release is too far off for Sony to have announced a price point, but the controller will retail for $49.99 in North America in the US.
