Sony has cast doubt over whether heavily-delayed PS3 game The Last Guardian will ever be released for PlayStation 3.

After the game’s no show at E3 this week, Eurogamer quizzed Sony Worldwide president Shuhei Yoshida on the status of the game.

“The team is back in Tokyo is working hard, and there are some technical difficulties that the team is focused on right now,” he explained. “That’s why we don’t have an update.”

While he stressed The Last Guardian remains “a PS3 game” he was unable to give a firm answer on whether the game will actually ever be released.

“When we have confidence in saying that, we will talk about it,” he responded to a question about the game never seeing the light of day. “But today, we are working through some engineering effort.”

This doesn’t sound all that promising for The Last Guardian, and could end up being one of the most high-profile cases of vapourware we’ve ever seen. Or could we end up seeing the game shifted over to the PS4 – a console powerful enough to overcome the dev team’s engineering problems perhaps?
