Development of PlayStation 3 exclusive The Last Guardian is being helped by Sony’s development studios in both the UK and the US, Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has told Wired.

Whilst Sony Santa Monica, the team behind God of War, has been named as one team lending a hand, Yoshida said that Team Ico’s game is being helped along by staff from other teams too.

“It’s not just Santa Monica. We have great tech people in Worldwide Studios,” he explained. “We have a central tech group in the US and the UK so we are giving them whatever help they need. Technically, we have the best engineers in the US and Europe, so these teams are helping them, giving advice.”

Regarding the progress being made on the game, announced back in May 2009, Yoshida suggested that development is slow.

“There’s a vision that we want to realise but it’s very very tough and technical issue that the team is tackling and some plans have to be made to evaluate and go through the process.

“At one point the progress was great, so we talked about the timing of the launch in the past. But now it’s making progress, but still not to the level – it’s playable, but not to the point that we can talk about the timing of launch.”

The last Guardian had been planned for release in winter 2011, but this release window was scrapped back in April 2011. No further release details have been specified.

Last year we had a cheeky sweepstake on the release date for The Last Guardian, with Tom Orry offering up a soft drink of the winner’s choice. Of all the editorial staff only myself and Mr Gaston remain in the running for the beverage.

However, my March/April 2012 guess is no longer possible, leaving only Martin’s pessimistic Christmas 2012 bet.
