Sony: ‘PS brand has had a solid calendar year’

Sony has announced that the PlayStation brand delivered continued sales momentum throughout 2008 with a total of 3.6 million PS3 units sold in the US, an increase of 40 per cent over the previous year. 726,005 PS3 hardware units were sold in December, representing a 92 per cent increase over November.

According to Sony the PS3 also generated one of its strongest months in software unit sales in the US, with almost six million units sold in December. Top-selling games for PS3 in December included Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet, CoD: World at War, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe and Prince of Persia.

For 2008 the best-selling PS3 titles included GTA4, CoD: World at War and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

While the PS3 continued to lose ground on the Xbox 360 – outsold by 2:1 for three consecutive months in the US – the PSP endured a two million unit loss to the Nintendo DS in December. Over one million PSP hardware units were sold during the month and more than 3.7 million software units were snapped up. Two of the year’s most popular titles included Crisis Core- Final Fantasy VII and God of War: Chains of Olympus, selling a combined 1,313,893 units in 2008.

The PS2 sold 410,000 units in December, with Sony highlighting that the Guitar Hero franchise sold over three million units on the platform in 2008.

Peter Dille, Senior Vice President of Marketing and PlayStation Network, Sony Computer Entertainment America, commented: “The PlayStation brand has had a solid calendar year with total PS3 hardware sales up 40% and total PS3 software sales up 115%. We remain confident in our momentum into 2009 as we continue to deliver to our consumers the best entertainment content and technology out there.”
