Sony has opened its own online store to independently and directly distribute PlayStation games and hardware to consumers (via VG247).

It’s only available for the U.S., but it shows that Sony has recognised the domination of digital distribution and taken matters into its own hands to bring home the bacon. The online store sells the PlayStation 4 console in two flavours, and bundles PlayStation VR hardware with Blood & Truth and Everybody's Golf, or the VR Aim Controller with Firewall Zero Hour.

PlayStation Plus memberships are being sold too, along with peripherals like headsets, Move Motion, and DualShock controllers. The online store links to the official PlayStation site, and a PlayStation Plus membership will afford the customer free one-day express shipping.

Sony confirmed that its own prices for its products match with those of other retailers, and to celebrate the launch of the store, two bundles are on offer with a fair discount. The PS4 12-month Plus bundle is on sale for $340 instead of $360, and the PS4 Pro 12-month Plus bundle is marked at $430 instead of $460. Charitable.

With the PS5 on the horizon, the online store would imaginably be dispensing the next-gen console by the dozen, if Sony decides to cut the number of PS5s headed to other retailers. The PS5 is on its way, but won’t be hitting the shelves before April next year, so Sony has time to trial this new online store and see if it works.
