Speaking in an interview with TheStreet.com, Tretton has been discussing the PlayStation 3, how well Sony did at E3, and the competition their next-gen PlayStation faces. Asked about the price of the PlayStation 3, Tretton took the opportunity to declare that Sony has already won.
“Well, I guess if price is the only consideration, then we’ve won the war, because we’ve got a $129 PlayStation 2 that outsells the Xbox 360 today.” He also noted that the Xbox 360, priced at $399, “falls well short of what the PlayStation 3 offers at $499.“
One of Microsoft’s biggest hands at E3 was the announcement that GTA IV would arrive on Xbox 360 from day one, something which previously had only happened on Sony platforms. Despite an apparent coo for Microsoft, Tretton doesn’t see it as such a big deal.
“There’s no question that having the Grand Theft Auto franchise helped us a lot and helped us sell some units, but I don’t think the battle would be any different with or without Grand Theft Auto. … I don’t think [losing GTA exclusivity] hurts us… I really don’t,” said Tretton.
On the whole Tretton says that they were really pleased with E3.
“… we really saw this as an opportunity to announce some very important details to the trade,” said Tretton. “And I think if you ask the trade, meaning the retail constituency and the third parties, they came away pretty pleased with how everything went.“
So, typical Sony, but if anyone has a right to be arrogant, it’s the market leader. How much the GTA non-exclusivity hurts them probably won’t be known for quite a while, but it has certainly made the next-gen console war rather interesting.
