Sony has announced during its latest financial results that PlayStation 4 has shipped approximately 86.1 million units worldwide.

The electronics giant revealed that 3.9 million PS4s were moved during the three month period ended September 30. This figures is down slightly year-on-year, although that's probably to be expected at this point in the console's lifecycle.

Sony has set its sights on shipping 17.5 million PS4s during the 2018 financial year, which wraps up on March 31, 2019.

Elsewhere, the format holder confirmed that PlayStation Plus has now hit 34.3 million members, marking an increase of 6.2 million over the previous financial year. PS4 software sales hit 75.1 million during the same period; 28% of these were purchased digitally, which is up ever so slightly on last year.

PS4 launched in November 2013 in the US and UK before arriving in Japan the following February.
