Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has “categorically” denied rumours originating on a Dutch website that the newly launched 40GB PlayStation 3 is suffering from a 40% failure rate.

Sony’s denial is actually the first we’d heard on the rumour, but it’s still good to know that 40GB PlayStation 3s can be bought without the fear of failure.

We are very proud of the quality and reliability of PlayStation 3 and are disappointed that such extremely sloppy journalism has resulted in this totally inaccurate story,” said David Reeves, President, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. “Since launching the 40GB PS3, we have experienced a fantastic jump in sales and the failure rates have remained at the very low level that we not only strive for, but have been achieving since the launch of PS3.

New PS3 buyers therefore have nothing to worry about, besides how you’re going to afford to buy all the great games coming out this Christmas. A problem not exclusive to PS3 owners we should add.
