Sonic Rivals was something a little different, offering fast, action-packed gameplay and the unique idea of racing a ‘rival’ across each game stage. Despite a few shortcomings, Rivals provided a fun handheld experience easily eclipsing Sonic’s 3D home console offerings.

Obviously proving a success, SEGA has announced that Sonic Rivals 2 is in development and hopes to build on the success of the first title. We’re promised a revamped rival jostling system which is said to create tighter head-to-head competition; a brand new Battle mode, enabling two players to compete in six multiplayer challenges using a single UMD and the PSP’s Wi-Fi capabilities; and a wealth of upgraded power-ups and range weapons.

Tails and other new characters have also been added, each with their own signature move, and players can now play each level at their own pace in a new Free-Play mode. Additionally, card trading and collection has been revamped for the sequel with 150 cards allowing players to customise characters, unlock Cup Circuits and unlock PSP backgrounds.

Sonic Rivals 2 is scheduled for release on PSP in the autumn.
