The forthcoming Sonic Mania aims to pull on the heartstrings of those of us who grew up on the Mega Drive games by employing a similar look and feel in the game’s main stages and, as revealed during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, the special stages, too.
The Sonic Stadium fansite was present and took a snap of the screenshot shown during the talk from publisher Sega. The stages are said to be like those seen in the Sega CD and Saturn Sonic titles, as players will be chasing a UFO to collect a Chaos emerald, building up speed by running into blue spheres, and prolonging their time by collecting rings.

As well as that, Mania will have cutscenes akin to what was seen in Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, and an opening animation like the one at the beginning of Sonic CD.

Sonic Mania continues to seem like the game fans have been looking for since the Mega Drive’s demise in the mid-90s and, thankfully, we don’t have long to wait to see all of these announcements being put into practice in the final game.
Sonic Mania is out August 15 on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
