It’s been nearly a year since Sonic 4: Episode 1, the first of several episodes planned for the blue hedgehog, but SEGA West CEO Mike Hayes has told VG247 that info on Episode 2 will arrive ‘very soon’.

Hayes wouldn’t comment on how soon ‘very soon’ actually is, but if Episode 2 is to arrive within a year of Episode 1, it’s fair to assume we’ll hear something over the next couple of weeks – perhaps over gamescom?

Sonic 4: Episode 1 received mixed reactions when it was released last year. Some thought it captured classic Sonic perfectly whilst at the same time being modern, whilst others criticised the physics of Sonic himself. “Sonic 4 does a fantastic job of recreating the retro Sonic experience that defined many a childhood, but ironically this could be considered its biggest shortcoming,” I said in my Sonic 4 review.

Anybody else think that making Sonic 4 episodic was a bad idea? Part of the charm with Sonic games – or 2D platformers in general – is being able to burn through them in one sitting. Sonic 4 was shorter than it should have been, making this side of the game less enjoyable. Why couldn’t SEGA have just waited a little longer and released a game with the full amount of zones from the off?
