Activision has revealed Skylanders: Swap Force, the third game in the smash hit Skylanders series due for release on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, Wii and 3DS this autumn.

Swap Force introduces 16 new Swap Force characters, a new range of interchangeable characters whose top and bottom halves can be switched with one another to create different types of Skylander.

For example, if you want to create a robot with squid legs, just pop the top half of Blast Zone onto a Wash Buckler, and you’ll see your creation appear in the game.

The mechanic will supposedly allow for 256 unique variations of Swap Force Skylanders, with each Swap Force character said to be around the size of a Skylanders Giant. It isn’t yet known how much Swap Force characters will cost.

In addition to the new Swap Force characters, 16 new standard Skylanders are also along for the ride, along with 8 new Lightcore characters and 16 reposed versions of existing characters.

Swap Force is also being developed by Vicarious Visions, the studio behind iOS Skylanders titles Cloud Patrol and Battlegrounds, who has tweaked the visuals significantly for HD consoles. Take a look at the difference – and get a first glimpse of the new characters – in our screenshot gallery.

There’s one unexpected downside, though: You’ll need a new Portal of Power to play Swap Force regardless of whether you already own the original portal. Boo.

A Starter Pack containing that, a copy of the game, two Swap Force characters and one regular Skylander will be available at launch. A UK price has yet to be announced.
