Silent Hill series producer, Motoi Okamoto, has responded to Hideo Kojima’s suggestion that remakes and sequels will be made by AI in the future, insisting that AI “would never be able to make” a sequel such as Silent Hill f.

Speaking to Rolling Stones Brasil, the Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding creator is translated by Dualshockers as lamenting the number of remakes and sequels. Kojima said, “People often ask me what I think about the gaming industry releasing so many sequels, but this isn’t exclusive to games. The film industry does the same thing with remakes and reboots”.

Kojima elaborated, “Since these works are already well known, it’s easier to produce them and attract investment. From a commercial standpoint, there’s nothing wrong with that. But if the industry only does that, it will be dangerous. We need to keep creating new things”. In the most controversial titbit from the interview, Kojima added, “I think that, in the future, remakes and sequels will be made by AI”.

Naturally, Kojima’s comments have circulated on social media, reaching Silent Hill producer, Motoi Okamoto. The producer responded to Kojima’s stance by arguing “It would be quite difficult for AI to replace works that take a significant departure from the original path of the series, like Silent Hill f”.

Okamoto agrees “AI may be able to put together a project for a sequel that takes place in the Silent Hill universe,” however, because it’s only a concoction of algorithms, it would never be able to make “bold choices” such as “changing the story’s setting to Japan or getting Ryukishi07 on board as a writer” (translation via Automaton Media).

More Silent Hill is Coming

Silent Hill f was a big departure from the series’ norm even beyond just setting the game in Japan and putting players in the shoes of schoolgirl Hinako Shimizu. Fortunately, the “bold choices” paid off as the game sold over one million copies in just three days, selling “faster” than the Silent Hill 2 remake in some regions.

Thankfully, we have way more Silent Hill on the way. Bloober Team are officially developing a Silent Hill 1 remake, so the AI overlords haven’t fully taken over just yet. We also have Silent Hill Townfall and there are rumors of it releasing in 2026.

As for where the series goes after, Okamoto has promised fans “not all future Silent Hill games will have gameplay like f” because the aim is “to create a series that is always challenging in a positive way, offering a different flavor of gameplay with each title”.
