It’s come to light that Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami will be leaving Tango Gameworks – the Bethesda studio behind The Evil Within and, more recently Hi-Fi Rush.

The news was discovered by TrueAchievements, who obtained an internal email sent to Zenimax employees by senior vice president of development Todd Vaughn. The email was later confirmed and verified by Bethesda themselves.

The email read: “I am writing today to let you know that studio head Shinji Mikami has decided to leave Tango Gameworks in the coming months.”

“Mikami-san has been a creative leader and supportive mentor to young developers at Tango for 12 years through his work on the Evil Within franchise, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and of course, Hi-Fi Rush.”

Shinji actually founded Tango Gameworks in March 2010, and the company was picked up by Bethesda just a few months later.

Of course, it was one of the many studios that Xbox acquired when Microsoft picked up the entirety of Bethesda parent company Zenimax in 2021.

Prior to all of this, he spent many years at Capcom – during which time he was credited as the leading force behind the early Resident Evil series, and has also worked on Dino Crisis, Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe.

His last game as director was 2014’s The Evil Within, but was an executive producer on subsequent games from the studio, including The Evil Within’s sequel, Ghostwire Tokyo and the surprise release of Hi-Fi Rush this past January.
