The upcoming Shenmue the Animation project from Crunchyroll and Adult Swim got its first trailer last night.

Shown off as part of the New York Comic Con yesterday evening, it’s our first look at the anime adaptation of the classic RPG. While we don’t spot any forklifts or book balancing, we do see hero Ryo getting into plenty of scraps. He’s on the search for the man responsible for killing his father, which takes him from Japan, to Hong Kong and beyond.

The thirteen episode series was first announced last September. Series creator Yu Suzuki is on executive producer duties, while the director is Chikara Sakura. The latter previously directed One Punch Man and has also worked on Naruto.

Shenmue III was the most recent entry in the world of the games. It finally arrived in 2019 following a lengthy Kickstarter campaign. Josh gave the game a score of 8 in his review at the time. “Shenmue’s meandering complexity is crammed into play—into an alluring array of divertissements, from getting a part-time job to playing in the arcades and keeping one’s kung fu skills honed.”

We should expect Shenmue the Animation to launch sometime in 2022. Check out the trailer for yourself down below.
