With Nintendo waiting until E3 to discuss its recently announced Nintendo 3DS, speculation on what will form the basis of its 3D display is rife.

The current favoured technology is Sharp’s parallax barrier screen, which allows separate image info to be sent to the left and right eyes and create a 3D image. It’s this technology which Sharp has been showing off at a recent showcase.

Sharp’s 3.4″ 3D touchscreen display boasts a screen resolution of 854×480 – a significant increase over the DS and DSi’s 256×192 resolution – and can switch between 3D and 2D viewing modes. Should the 3DS feature two of Sharp’s 3D screens the handheld will be outputting a combined resolution greater than 720p.

You can see the screen in action – although you won’t be able to experience the 3D effect – in the video below.
