Sega has announced that its Mega Drive Mini console has been pushed into 2019, the company said during a Tweet (translated by Gematsu).

Originally due out in Japan this year, the Sega Mega Drive Mini (or Sega Genesis Mini depending on which part of the world you're in) has been delayed as Sega is now pushing for a simultaneous worldwide release for the nostalgia-scented console.

Mini consoles are definitely the big thing right now. We've got a NES Mini and SNES Mini already out, and Sony's currently chiselling away on a PlayStation Classic console. There's 20 games planned, including Final Fantasy VII and Tekken 3.

It's worth remembering that this isn't the first pint-sized version of the Mega Drive. AtGames launched an officially licensed Flashback version of the console last year, though having played it round my mate's house, I can say with confidence it's a bit of a mess.
