Rare has made the fan-pleasing announcement that it’s collaborating with Lucasfilm Games to bring the universe of Monkey Island into Sea of Thieves in a brand new free expansion coming in July.

Entitled The Legend of Monkey Island – the expansion will be released in three parts on a monthly schedule, with the first part dropping on July 20 and tell a whole new tale featuring the iconic characters and locations from Monkey Island – including Melee Island and the Scumm Bar and folks like Murray, Elaine and of course, Guybrush Threepwood himself, with their regular voice actors returning to reprise their roles (where possible.)

We’re promised there’ll be some classic point-and-click style adventure shenanigans during the three tall tales, which have been tweaked slightly to fit Sea of Thieves’ first person perspective. In terms of plot, an interview on the Xbox Wire reveals that the game is sort of a ‘what if’ scenario – specifically, what if Guybrush and Elaine ended up spending their honeymoon they sailed off to at the end of The Curse of Monkey Island on the Sea of Thieves?

We’ll get to find out soon enough, when the first part of The Legend of Monkey Island arrives in Sea of Thieves from July 20, 2023.
