Syfy and THQ have begun production of the two-hour Red Faction: Origins television movie, which could be commissioned into a full-blown series.

Red Faction: Origins will star Terminator 2’s Robert Patrick as Alex Mason, 25 years after leading the Martian colonies to freedom. Tamzin Merchant (Tudors) plays his kidnapped daughter.

Mason’s son Jake (Brian J. Smith from Stargate: Universe) later discovers his sister is still alive.

Other roles are filled by Torchwood’s Gareth David-Lloyd, Battlestar Galactica’s Kate Vernon, Danielle Nicolet from The Starter Wife and Dexter’s Devon Graye.

The TV movie will air in May.

TV movies are very hit and miss, and when coupled with the poor record for making good movies from video games, it’s difficult to get too excited by the Red Faction movie.

Hopefully it will be at worst watchable.
