Developer Damage State has released its first devlog detailing upcoming bullet hell FPS shooter, Scathe.

This first video features lead programmer Chris Dawson talking about the challenges of bringing the genre into first person. Dawson says how most players will be familiar with the bullet hell genre from 2D side scrollers like Ikaruga & Cuphead. Translating those same mechanics into a first person view meant having to break expectations and consider the vertical axis.

The team’s been hard at work to ensure the screen can get full enough of projectiles to create a challenge, while at the same time not be overwhelming. To help you out, you’ll be able to move, jump and even dash through certain projectiles to avoid damage. Demons will attack from land sea and air, and even bullet hell veterans should expect a stiff challenge.

If you missed the original announcement last month, Scathe sees you playing as an Enforcer for the legions of Hell. You’re thrown into a demonic maze which you must escape by collecting three Hellstones and getting to the centre of the maze. Expect plenty of weapons, blistering speed and drop in/drop out crossplay online multiplayer to give you a fighting chance.

Scathe arrives at some point later this year on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC.
