GSC Game World has confirmed that upcoming apocalyptic shooter S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl will now launch in 2023.

The Ukrainian studio gave fans a welcome update on themselves & the game at the Xbox Game Showcase Extended show. The team have been moving development to a second studio in Prague, Czech Republic as their usual home of Kyiv in the Ukraine is in the midst of its war with Russia. Those who can have been relocated, while others are working remotely, and others still are fighting on the front lines.

In so far as the game’s concerned, development has indeed resumed now the teams are relatively safe. To that end, they’ve also shown off a new trailer with footage taken from the beginning of the game. We get to see how the player character makes it into the irradiated heart of Chornobyl, where the game takes place.

On top of this, GSC Game World also released a short developer diary video showcasing the realities of how the war changed development for them. It’s raw and might be a tough watch, but the team wanted to show the world what they’re facing and how they’re overcoming this unique challenge. We’ve embedded that below too, and we will warn it may contain images of the war you might find upsetting.

The team closed with a message to fans: “Despite the ongoing tragedy and personal losses during the period of the frightening uncertainty in our lives, the will of the team to deliver a truly remarkable game is as high as ever. We aim to show the world Ukraine can stand strong not just on the battlefield, but as a part of distinctive and memorable world culture.”
