Yahoo Games reports that Rockstar Games and Amazon have teamed up to create a new way for video game players to buy real-world MP3s of songs heard on the radio stations featured in Grand Theft Auto IV.
The in-game “ZiT” technology is built into GTA 4’s mobile phone interface, enabling players to tag a song currently playing on the in-game radio by dialling ZIT-555-0100. The in-game mobile phone will then receive a text message containing the title of the song and the artist’s name. Additionally, if the gamer is registered on the newly announced Rockstar Games Social Club, an email will be sent containing a direct link to an Amazon.com custom playlist.
This playlist will store all tagged songs, from which you can listen to previews and purchase any of the songs in digital form.
“Music has long played an integral part of the game playing experience,” said Ronn Werre, EVP, EMI Music’s Sales, Licensing and Synchronization unit. “We think giving players the ability to identify and buy their favorite tracks from Grand Theft Auto IV’s popular radio stations is a great new music discovery tool for fans and an innovative new revenue stream for artists.”
Rockstar notes that GTA 4’s soundtrack is “the biggest in the history of entertainment” featuring over 150 tracks, ranging from high-profile tunes, to hard to find rare songs, to all-new songs from artists including the Greenskeepers and rapper Nas.
Music loving non-American gamers will, at least initially, be out of luck though, with the ZiT service only available in the US.
