Rocket League’s PS4-Xbox One cross-network play is ready, Psyonix has revealed, although it cannot be activated until the developer receives permission from Sony.
Speaking to IGN, VP Jeremy Dunham explained that the service could be up in a matter of “hours” if Sony decides to give the team the go-ahead.
“Right now, we’re literally at the point where all we need is the go-ahead on the Sony side and we can, in less than a business day, turn it on and have it up and working no problem,” Dunham said. “It’d literally take a few hours to propagate throughout the whole world, so really we’re just waiting on the permission to do so.”
Microsoft announced plans to open up Xbox Live earlier this year, potentially allowing PS4 and Xbox One players to play with or against each other. Sony, however, has yet to follow suit, later explaining that it would have to consider “policy issues and business issues” before opening up PlayStation Network.
The game currently allows PS4 and Xbox One players to play with/against PC users, but not between the two consoles. And whether Sony will ever allow it still isn’t known.
“Sony’s such a big company that I’m sure it takes a while for them to figure out what it is that the roadblocks are, what sort of issues they might run into with other titles, any number of things that I can’t even begin to speculate on,” Dunham said.
“It was just as much of a surprise to them as I think the rest of the world when Microsoft said that they would do it.”
