Yesterday, Rocket League developer Psyonix announced that the game will roll out an alternative approach for its loot crates later this year, removing random chance to show what items the purchase will unlock in advance.

In a post on the Rocket League site, Psyonix stated that ‘all paid, randomized Crates’ will be removed from the game later this year, swapping them with ‘a system that shows the exact items you’re buying in advance.’ The developer said the change was motivated by an effort to give ‘the best possible experience for our players all over the world’. More information on the new crate system will be shared in the next few months.

As Psyonix was acquired by Epic Games earlier this year, a shift to a Fortnite-style system for in-game bonuses does add up. Moreover, loot boxes and microtransactions are being put under a magnifying glass by external authorities and by players themselves, so greater clarity on what purchases will unlock won’t be remiss.
