Rocket League is getting a new CS:GO-style ‘crate’ system that will let players unlock additional items for a fee, Psyonix has revealed.
While the first official details on the system aren’t set to be revealed until the Rocket League Championship Series finals next month, info posted by Psyonix VP Jeremy Dunham on Reddit confirms that the crates will only contain cosmetic items, and that the developer has no intention of integrating Steam Marketplace support. That means no skin gambling.
The game’s existing DLC model won’t be abandoned, either, with free arenas, modes and items still in the pipe.
Here’s what Dunham has to say:
- Crates will contain cosmetic content only. We have a strict “Don’t Sell Advantage” policy for Rocket League, and we’re sticking with that.
- There will be no Steam Marketplace integration with crates. We are definitely aware of the problems related to third-party gambling in other games and we are not interested in taking that approach.
- Players who don’t want to interact with this system can hide it entirely with a single checkbox. Also of note, this won’t affect or impact our current item-drop system in any way.
- We also want to reassure you guys that we are sticking with our approach to keep introducing free new Arenas, Modes, and Items, along with the occasional paid DLC just like we always have.
It isn’t yet known how much keys to unlock the crates will cost or whether they can be earned via gameplay. It also isn’t clear whether the system will be limited to PC or if it’ll be available across all platforms.
The system will be used to fund the game’s eSports prize pools and events, Dunham adds.
Rocket League’s Championship Series finals kick off on August 6. Expect to hear more info then.
