Konami has revealed (via a 1UP exclusive) that the much loved Rocket Knight franchise is making a long-overdue return in a 2.5D sequel scheduled for release on PSN, XBLA and Steam in 2010.

Rocket Knight hero Sparkster returns after a prolonged absence, bar the odd cameo appearance, with events picking up some 15 years after the last game in the series. The idea is that in the fifteen years that have passed, Sparkster hasn’t been up to anything particularly exciting, having moved away with his family for a quiet life.

Things changed when he looked up to see a war raging in the sky over the kingdom of Zephyrus, although to his surprise his former enemies, the pigs, were fighting on the side of the opossums against the army of wolves. And in Sparkster’s absence, his former nemesis Axel Gear had become the kingdom’s Rocket Knight.

The sequel is being developed by Climax Studios (Silent Hill: Origins, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories). You’ll find a lot more info on the game over on 1UP.
