Nintendo has revealed Ring Fit Adventure, the new fitness game coming to the Switch that uses the flexible ring peripheral to transform physical force into powerful attacks.

Last week, Nintendo teased a new exergaming title that slots one Joy-Con into a flexible wheel, and ties the other Joy-Con to the player’s leg using a strap. Friends and families from across the world engaged in games that involved sprinting on the spot, squeezing and compressing the wheel, balance tests, knee ups, and V sits. Today, Nintendo has unveiled Ring Fit Adventure: ‘an adventure game, first and foremost, but you’ll be actually moving your body – you might even break a sweat while playing.’

In Ring Fit Adventure, players will explore 20 different fantasy worlds to take down Dragaux, a buff body-building dragon who has brought chaos to the lands. To travel forward, players will jog in place and hop up stairs by doing knee ups; the Joy-Con in the leg strap senses lower body movement. To jump over obstacles, aim the Ring downwards and the Joy-Con will register that as a leap upwards. Other modes of movement include paddle-boarding, flying, and rolling on a skateboard, that all take advantage of the new peripheral’s capabilities.

In random encounters, much like Pokémon, monsters will interrupt the player’s exploration. To battle and charge up powerful attacks, players will squat, press and flex their way through challenges intended for a wide range of body types and varying fitness experience.

Initially, I was unnerved by these beautiful beings telling me how much fun squeezing a ring could be. But, I only ‘enjoy’ exercise if I don’t know that I’m doing it. By travelling the world, battling monsters, and humbling Dragaux, I’m technically gaming and not working out, and therefore they’ve got me.

Ring Fit Adventure comes to the Nintendo Switch on October 18. Watch the reveal trailer below.
