According to an online report, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City has been revealed within the pages of the May issue of OXM.
Seen by stickskills, the magazine’s cover story features a bunch of info on the title which is scheduled for release this winter for Xbox 360 and PS3.
The game takes place in 1998 and, rather than retread old ground, will allow players to experience the original outbreak that led to both Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.
Described as a team-based shooter, players will initially take control the four-man official Umbrella Security Services squad. Their goal is to destroy all evidence of the ongoing outbreak, taking out all zombies and killing every survivor.
The magazine describes the game as “dirty,” lending Raccoon City a much darker tone than other games in the franchise.
In addition to the Umbrella Security Services, two further factions will be featured in the game: the US Spec Ops and the Bio Organic Weapon Monsters (BOWs) created by Umbrella. Expect some form of three-way conflict.
The USS is comprised of Vector, Beltway, Bertha, and Spectre. Tasks in the game will vary depending on which character is chosen.
Dependent on how the game is played, players will be given the option to change the history of Resident Evil. In addition to meeting various famous faces, it will also be possible to kill them, including Leon S Kennedy.
Operation Raccoon City is sounding pretty interesting, offering something new to the Resident Evil franchise, yet featuring enough to keep long-term fans from freaking out.
There’s currently no word on cooperative or competitive multiplayer, but both sound like realistic options given the team-based nature of the game.
